As part of the BBC Young Reporter Festival, Year 11 English students were invited last week to listen to an insightful interview with AA Dhand, the writer of the upcoming BBC drama Virdee, composer Eeshar Singh, and Drama Unit Manager Simmi Ryatt. The drama, which will air this week, sparked a fascinating discussion on the process of creating a TV series.
Dhand shared his experience of transforming a novel into a screenplay, highlighting his key mantra of ‘Pace, Passion, and Power’ as crucial elements for a compelling plot. He also provided an in-depth analysis of the scriptwriting techniques behind popular shows like Luther and Happy Valley, noting how the ‘good guy’ often drives the plot forward. His main message to students was to seize opportunities when they come and to approach their work with passion and drive.
This unique experience offered our students valuable insights into the world of scriptwriting and television production, inspiring them to think creatively about their own work. We look forward to watching Virdee and are delighted our students had a chance to engage in this exciting learning opportunity.
