Year 7 Students Step Back in Time to Experience Life as a Medieval Peasant

Last Thursay our Year 7 students visited Tatton Park in Cheshire, where they experienced firsthand what life was like as a Medieval Peasant. The immersive experience allowed them to engage with history in a hands-on way, helping them understand the daily challenges faced by people living in the 1300s.

The day kicked off with the students learning to build Wattle and Daub tiles, a traditional method used in constructing medieval homes. Armed with mud, straw, and wooden sticks, the students quickly realized the effort required to make sturdy walls for shelter. They also had the chance to try carding wool, an essential skill for producing yarn and fabric. The students gained a deeper appreciation for how long it took to make clothing in medieval times.

Another physically demanding task was thrashing and grinding flour. This intensive process highlighted the effort needed to provide food for the community.

One of the highlights of the trip was learning how to use a Medieval Long Bow for hunting. Students practiced their aim, learning the precision and skill required for medieval hunting. It was an exciting challenge, with everyone eager to test their abilities.

By the end of the day, the Year 7s had gained a real understanding of the hardships of medieval life and the hard work involved in everyday tasks. Everyone realised that life in the 1300s wasn’t as easy or glamorous as they had imagined, and the experience provided them with a deeper appreciation for the comforts of modern life.
