As the children come to the end of their topic on the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, they were all left mystified and trembling after Olaf Grimson travelled from afar to visit them and share his perilous stories, transporting them back in time!
Olaf brought with him a fascinating collection of artefacts, including shields, spears, statues, chainmail, money, and jewels. The children were particularly intrigued by the intricate designs on the shields and the craftsmanship of the spears. The statues depicted various Norse gods and mythical creatures, adding a mystical element to the display. The chainmail and armour showcased the Vikings' advanced metalworking skills, while the coins and jewels highlighted their trade and wealth.
The highlight of the day was seeing Genevieve and Freddie dress up in traditional Viking attire. Freddie donned armour and a helmet, looking every bit the fierce Viking warrior, while Genevieve dressed as a Viking housewife, complete with a traditional apron and headscarf. This interactive experience brought the history to life and allowed the children to immerse themselves in the Viking world.
Another exciting part of the experience was the reenactment battle between the Year 6 pupils. Equipped with shields and foam swords, the children were divided into two groups and taught basic Viking battle tactics by Olaf. They then engaged in a mock battle, experiencing firsthand the thrill and strategy involved in Viking warfare. The children cheered each other on, and the air was filled with laughter and excitement as they clashed shields and swung their swords.
The day ended with a whole school assembly where Olaf told a special folk story about mythical creatures and characters! The story was particularly special because it highlighted the values of courage, wisdom, and perseverance, which resonated deeply with the children mirroring our own Round Square Values. We can't wait to see Olaf again next year and hear more of his thrilling tales!
