On 10th February 2025, Drama students from AKS Lytham were fortunate to take part in a theatre workshop led by a Splendid Productions. The workshop took place in the school’s Drama studio, where it was designed to engage students from Year 9 and 10 in a series of interactive activities aimed at exploring Physical Theatre. Splendid Productions are creative adaptors, we take old stories and spin them into new thought prodding, theatrical, inclusive, political, anti-4th wall, heart-exposing versions. The session proved to be a valuable experience, offering students a chance to gain insight into professional theatre-making techniques while having fun in a collaborative environment.
The workshop consisted of a variety of activities, both group and individual tasks, that allowed us to explore different aspects of theatre production. Some of the exercises included role-playing scenes and character development work. The activities were structured to encourage creative thinking and teamwork, as well as self-expression. We worked in groups, engaging with each other to build scenes and share ideas, whilst also participating in individual tasks to enhance their personal skills. These activities were particularly useful for linking the physical aspects of Drama to our GCSE studies. The workshop helped us to gain a higher understanding of what to do when it comes to us devising our own pieces in our GCSE class.
One of the key takeaways from the workshop was the opportunity to engage directly with a professional who provided valuable feedback and guidance. For many students, the chance to work in a supportive environment helped them to improve their skills and feel more confident in their abilities.
My personal favourite part of the session was when we performed a short scene on a fairy tale such as the Three Little Pigs and The Big Bad Wolf. It was both challenging and exciting to see how quickly we could develop a performance from scratch. Overall, the workshop was a fantastic experience, and it would be great if workshops like these could come into schools more regularly to provide further learning opportunities.
