Sixth Form Geography Fieldwork in the North Lakes

Between Sunday 23rd and Tuesday 25th March, the sixth form geography students undertook a three-day fieldwork residential in the North Lakes area. The purpose of the trip was to investigate the glacial landscapes evident in the region and to think about how this part of the country has a unique sense of place.
Starting in Glenridding on the first day, the group walked up the Glenridding valley to Kepple Cove to study the glacial processes and resultant landscapes evident in the valley. The students also discovered why Glenridding has its own sense of place, as a combination of human and physical influences on the landscape.
On the second day the group travel down the Borrowdale and Buttermere valleys before heading out to the coast around the village of Allenby, all the while building up a detailed picture of how glacial processes have modified the landscapes in these areas. The final day saw the students investigate more lowland features with various stops being made on the way back to school.
The students gained much first hand knowledge and experience of undertaking observations in the field, which will provide many useful examples for their A level examinations.  A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Winterflood who accompanied this trip, providing the students with a wealth of information about the Lake District landscapes and glacial geomorphology.
