The annual Headmaster’s Dinner took place on Friday 21st March, bringing together Year 13 students, form tutors, school leadership, and governors for an evening of reflection and inspiration. Held in the OAKS Hall, the event featured a drinks reception and a delicious three-course meal, courtesy of our talented catering team and head chef, Steve Shepherd, with special sponsorship from Lexington Independents.
The Dinner serves as a unique occasion for our Sixth Form students to experience a formal evening, marking the final stages of their school journey as they prepare for their upcoming exams. This year, Air Commodore Robin Caine MBE MA FCMI RAF delivered an inspirational after-dinner speech, offering valuable advice and life lessons to the students as they take their next steps.
With a career spanning over two decades in the Royal Air Force, Air Commodore Caine’s humility and ability to relate to the students resonated deeply with his audience. Drawing on his own experiences, he emphasised the importance of decision-making and shared the RAF motto, "Per Ardua ad Astra" - "Through Adversity to the Stars." He encouraged the students to set their sights high and not be discouraged by setbacks, viewing failure as an opportunity for growth.
One of the key messages from Robin’s speech was the significance of overcoming adversity and maintaining humility. He urged students to stay grounded and treat others with kindness and respect, sharing that the friendships they make at AKS will be among the most enduring of their lives. Reflecting on his own journey, he advised the students to “stay focused on the now” and to approach their challenges with a sense of purpose, just as pilots do when preparing for flight.
In his closing remarks, Robin encouraged the students to “be of service” and find something that gives them purpose in life. He wished them the best of luck in their final exams and as they prepare for the exciting journey ahead.
Air Commodore Caine’s career highlights include serving as a Tornado pilot, Electronic Warfare Instructor, and Chief Weapons Instructor. He has also held significant operational roles, including commanding RAF and University Air Squadron cadets and overseeing UK Military Flying Training. With over 2,500 fast jet hours, Robin was awarded an MBE in 2015 and the Master’s Medal from the Guild of Air Pilots in 2019. He holds an MA from King’s College London and is a graduate of the Joint Services Higher Command and Staff Course.
Head Student, Toby C, presented Robin with a token of appreciation, sharing some light-hearted anecdotes from Robin’s own time at school, which were enjoyed by the audience, including Deputy Head, Phil Hayden, who attended school with Robin.
The evening was brought to a close by Headmaster David Harrow, who reflected, “The Headmaster’s Dinner is always a genuine highlight of the year. It’s incredible to see how our students have grown into the remarkable young people they are today. This evening is a chance to cherish the memories and celebrate their journey as they prepare for the future.”
The meal at the Headmaster’s Dinner was sponsored by Lexington Independents, a company dedicated to providing nutritious, seasonal catering to independent schools, nurturing students' ability to learn and thrive.
